Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the calculation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide + water -> oxygen + glucose
What is photosynthesis
the process by which a plant uses light energy to synthesis organic molecules.
Function of Cuticle
Prevents excessive water loss and damage
Function of upper epidermis
Produces and secretes the waxy substance that makes up the cuticle.
Function of palisade layer
Contain lots of chloroplasts- main site of photosynthesis for the leaf
Function of spongy layer
Facilitates diffusion of gases into/ out of the leaf.
Function of lower epidermis
•Facilitates majority of gas exchange in the leaves
• Regulates loss of water from the leaf
xylem vessels
Vascular tissue that transports water and mineral ions from the roots to the
leaves. Also provides structural support to the plant.
Phloem vessels
Vascular tissue that transports nutrients (sugars and amino acids) to other parts of the plant.
Testing leaf for starch
•Boil the leaf - Breaks open the cell membranes for removal of chlorophyll; also kills the leaf to stop any further chemical reactions.
•Add the leaf to heated ethanol- Ethanol will dissolve the chlorophyll, removing the green colour
from the leaf- this will help identify a distinct colour change
when testing with iodine.
•Dip the leaf back in water - This will rehydrate and soften the leaf, it can now be spread out
on a white tile.
•Add iodine - If starch is present iodine will turn from orange-brown to a blue-
black colour. If no starch is present there will be no colour
change.
Where does photosynthesis take place
in the palisade cell
