photosynthesis Flashcards
1
Q
photosynthesis
A
process when light energy is trapped and used to build organic molecules.
2
Q
what happens in photosynthesis?
A
light energy is transformed into chemical energy
3
Q
chloroplasts
A
- mainly located in the leaves
- contain chlorophyll
- chlorophyll traps light energy
4
Q
chlorophyll
A
a pigment-protein which is embedded in the thylakoid membranes of the grana
5
Q
where does stage 1 (splitting water) occur?
A
chloroplast- specifically inside the thylakoid membrane in a granum
6
Q
what does stage 1 (splitting water) need?
A
- light
- the chlorophyll molecules absorb the light and transform this into chemical energy (light-dependent stage)
7
Q
what happens in stage 1 (water splitting)?
A
- the water molecule is split
- H2O is split into oxygen and high-energy ions and electrons
- H+ are picked up by a coenzyme called NADP+ and becomes NADPH and are carried to the next stage
- excited electrons are used to make 18 ATP which are also moved to the next stage
8
Q
light dependent stage inputs
A
- light
- water
-NADP+ - ADP
