Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is the ultimate source of energy?
The sun, all life forms depend on the sun for it’s energy to sustain it. Without the sun we would not be able to survive.
What needs to happen to the sun’s energy before we can use it?
Energy from the sun must first be converted before we can use it.
What is the plant’s job when it comes to the sun’s energy?
The plants job is to convert the sun’s energy into something that we can use.
What is the definition of Photosynthesis?
Photo= Light
Synthesis= To make
Photosynthesis= Light making
Plants therefore make their own food by the process of photosynthesis.
How do plants make their own food?
It is performed by a series of chemical reactions- Synthetic reactions= a chemical process in which two or more simple elements/compounds combine to form a more complex product.
What are the resources needed to preform Photosynthesis?
Sunlight, water, carbon dioxide (Co2).
Why do plants appear to be green?
Plants appear to be green because of the chloroplast which contains chlorophyll.
What action is completed by chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll absorbs sunlight.
What is chloroplast?
Chloroplast is a plastid in green plant cells which contain chlorophyll and in which Photosynthesis takes place.
What is chlorophyll?
Chlorophyll is a green pigment, present in all green plants and Cyanobacteria, which is responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for Photosynthesis.
What is Cyanobacteria?
Cyanobacteria is a division of microorganisms that are related to bacteria, but are capable of photosynthesis.
How is water absorbed by plants?
Plant roots absorb water from the soil.
where do plants absorb Co2 from?
Plants absorb Co2 from the atmosphere.
How do plants absorb Co2?
Gases are exchanged via small holes in the leaves which are called stomata.
What is stomata?
Stomata is small holes in the plants leaves which exchange gases.
