Photosynthesis Flashcards
What is it?
The process plants use to make their own food, glucose. In photosynthesis, carbon dioxide and water react together to make glucose and oxygen.
Where does it take place?
Chloroplasts in the leaf cells, a small amount happens in the stem.
The word equation
carbon dioxide + water —> glucose + oxygen
What else is needed
Light and chlorophyll
What minerals do plants need
Nitrates-for healthy growth
Phosphates-for healthy roots
Potassium-for healthy leaves and flowers
Magnesium-for making chlorophyll
How can you tell if they have deficiencies
Nitrates deficiency-poor growth and older leaves are yellow
Magnesium deficiency-plant leaves turn yellow
Phosphorus deficiency-poor growth and younger leaves look purple
Potassium deficiency-yellow leaves with dead patches
