photosynthesis Flashcards
atom
the basic unit of a chemical element
molecule
a group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound that can take part in a chemical reaction.
cyanobacteria
a phylum of Gram-negative bacteria that obtain energy via photosynthesis
chloroplast
a plastid that contains chlorophyll and in which photosynthesis takes place.
photosynthesis
the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis in plants generally involves the green pigment chlorophyll and generates oxygen as a byproduct.
atp
a compound consisting of an adenosine molecule bonded to three phosphate groups, present in all living tissue. The breakage of one phosphate linkage (to form adenosine diphosphate, ADP ) provides energy for physiological processes such as muscular contraction.
absorb
take in or soak up (energy or a liquid or other substance) by chemical or physical action.
“buildings can be designed to absorb and retain heat”
glucose
a simple sugar which is an important energy source in living organisms and is a component of many carbohydrates.
chlorophyll
a green pigment, present in all green plants and in cyanobacteria, responsible for the absorption of light to provide energy for photosynthesis. Its molecule contains a magnesium atom held in a porphyrin ring.
thylaroids
each of a number of flattened sacs inside a chloroplast, bounded by pigmented membranes on which the light reactions of photosynthesis take place, and arranged in stacks or grana.
“thylakoid membranes”
ion
an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
“hydrogen ions”
light independent reaction
a series of biochemical reactions in photosynthesis not requiring light to proceed, and ultimately produce organic
stroma
The cells and tissues that support and give structure to organs, glands, or other tissues in the body.
the Calvin cycle
A series of chemical reactions that occurs as part of the dark reactions of photosynthesis
producers
organisms that produce food for themselves and other organisms
