Q

What are carotenoids?

A

The carotenoids are accessory pigments that absorb other wavelengths of light. The carotenoids extend the range of wavelengths absorbed and pass this energy onto chlorophyll

Q

What happens when a pigment absorbs light energy?

16
Q

What is the second stage in photosynthesis called?

A

Carbon fixation or Calvin Cycle

17
Q

Where does the light dependent stage take place?

A

Granum

18
Q

Where does the carbon fixation stage take place?

A

stroma of chloroplast

19
Q

What is the primary carbon dioxide accpetor?

A

RuBisCO

20
Q

What is the first reaction in the calvin cycle?

A

the enzyme RuBisCO fixes carbon dioxide by attaching it to RibuloseBiPhosphate (RuBP) which results in 3-posphoglycerate (3PG)

21
Q

What is the second reaction to take place in the calvin cycle?

A

3-phosphoglycerate combines with hydrogen from NADPH and becomes phosphorylated by ATP (ATP goes to ADP) to create Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate (G3P)

22
Q

What happens to glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate?

A

Used to synthesis glucose and some regenerates RuBP

23
Q

What can glucose do?

A
  • substrate for respiration
  • storage of carbohydrate starch
  • structural carbohydrate cellulose
