photosynthesis Flashcards
Chemical Reaction
A process by which one of more substances change to produce one or more different substances.
Chloroplast
A membrane-bound organelle in plants that is the site of photosynthesis.
Energy
The ability of a system to do work; required for changes to happen within a system.
Glucose
A sugar composed of six carbon atoms that is the preferred energy source for most cells; produced by photosynthesis
Matter cycle
A movement of elements or molecules through a repeated sequence of events
Microorganism
an organism that is too small to be seen with the naked eye
Photosynthesis
a chemical reaction during which plants convert radiant energy from the sun to chemical energy; the reaction converts carbon dioxide and water into sugar (glucose) and oxygen.
Phytoplankton
Microscopic plants that live in aquatic environment and perform photosynthesis.
Product
A substance produced during a chemical reaction
Reactant
A substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a chemical reaction.
BONUS CARD: What does the fox say?
The world may never know
Carbon
A naturally occurring element of earth; an essential building block of organic compounds
Carbon Dioxide
A gas that is a natural component of the atmosphere; produced by cells during cellular respiration and used by plants and other organisms for photosynthesis
Cellular respiration
The process of obtaining energy from the breaking of chemical bonds in nutrients
