Pixel
The smallest controllable element of a picture represented on a screen; picture element
Megapixel
1 million pixels, refers to the size of an image.
Resolution
The quality of an image; number of pixels, distribution of pixels (sand)
Bitmap
Commonly used raster graphic format for saving image files. Stores colour data without compression. High-quality graphics but large file sizes. Used for digital images.
JPEG
Joint Photographic Experts Group. Varying levels of compression, but some image quality lost during compression. Used to send images. Old format.
Image sensor, CCD
Charged Coupled Device. Captures light and converts it to digital data that’s recorded by the camera.
Image sensor, CMOS
Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor. Similar function to CCD, used in better digital cameras.
Hue
Refers to a specific waveband on the visible spectrum (colour)
Saturation
Defines the intensity of the hue
Image contrast
Difference between light and dark on an image (the range)
Image brightness
The overall lightness or darkness of an image
Layers palette on Photoshop
Used to manage layers
Liquify filter on Photoshop
Allows you to push, pull, rotate, reflect, pucker, and bloat any area of an image
Key light
The main light used on a subject
Fill light
Purpose is to fill in the shadows created by the key light, preventing them from getting too dark.
