Photography Flashcards
What is composition
The purposeful arrangement of the components of an image
Composition is essential because it helps a photographer ….
Communicate (more effectively, quickly, and powerfully)
What are the elements of communication? (3)
Organization, Emphasis, Depth Perception
What is organization
The arrangement of elements within a composition to help the viewer understand them
What are the 3 elements of Organization
Simplicity, Order, Balance
What is simplicity
The elimination of unnecessary objects so that the viewer only has to fewer things
What category is simplicity from
Organization
What is order
A neat line up of objects in a composition
What category is order apart of
Organization
What is balance
It is the distribution of objects in a way that make the image equal in visual weight on all (invisible) sides
What category is balance apart of
Organization
What is emphasis (what does it do)
Emphasis draws the viewers attention to one part of the composition
What are the 4 types of Emphasis
Position, Relationship, Significance, Contrast (which has 5 sub categories)
What is position
It is the way you position it within the frame. Most Important point is the top left. (Like reading)
What category is position apart of
Emphasis
What is relationship
Elements being placed next to another in a frame that draws attention to the other element
What is significance
When compositional elements attract attention simply because they mean something to the audience.
What is contrast
Making an element in a picture by look different than the other elements.
What are the 5 examples of contrast
Size, shape, brightness, color, focus
What is depth perception
It is the creation of depth (3D) on a 2D image
What are the 6 ways depth perception is achieved
Size, overlap, convergence, vertical position, sharpness, colour intensity
How does size achieve depth perception
The closer an object is, the larger it appears
How does overlap achieve depth perception
One object will mask another if it is in front of it.
How does convergence achieve depth perception
Parallel lines will converge to a single point the more distant it is (railroad tracks)
How does vertical position achieve depth perception
The farther away objects are, the higher they usually appear in the field of view.
How does sharpness achieve depth perception
The farther away objects are, the more indistinct they appear. (OR, atmospheric perspective.)
How does colour intensity achieve depth perception
The farther away something is, the paler and more pastel its colors appear.
