A photograph of unposed elements
Candid
A printing effect that extends an image to the outer edges of the page.
Bleed
A drawing that distorts a person’s face for satirical purposes.
Caricature
The focal point of a picture.
Center of Interest
The relative position of one subject to another and one subject to the edge of the photograph.
Composition
To indicate the part of a photograph’s image area to be reproduced. Cropping is done to eliminate areas within the photograph and improve composition.
Crop
Indications on the white margin of the photograph indicating what to include and what to exclude from the picture.
Crop Marks
Area of acceptably sharp focus beyond and in front of the actual point of focus.
Depth of Field
The major element that stands out on a page by virtue of its size and placement.
Dominance
A film’s sensitivity to light. Fast film needs less light than slow film.
Film Speed
A picture with very little variation in brightness between light and dark areas.
Flat
An element in the foreground that serves to narrow attention to the photograph’s center of interest.
Framing
Having a broad range of tones from vivid whites through numerous gray tones to rich saturated blacks.
Full Scale
A special effect that overexposes a photograph so that it will be lightened when reproduced.
Ghosting
The lightest or whitest parts of a picture.
Highlight
A picture where the center of interest lies horizontally.
Horizontal Shot
Head and shoulder photograph.
Mug Shot
The technique of reporting timely events with photographs and
captions.
Photojournalism
An electronic picture element; sometimes informally referred to as a dot.
Pixel
Initials that stand for pixels per inch and describe display resolution.
PPI
The printing of yellow, magenta, cyan and black in various
intensities, values and screens to reproduce full color photographs or art.
Process Color
Degree of clarity and sharpness to which a laser printer or camera
can adjust.
Resolution
A principal that divides a photo into nine equal segments. The
center of interest should lie at one of the four corners of the center segments.
Rule of Thirds
A mechanical device in a camera that opens and closes for a measured length of time to allow photographic film or plates to be exposed to light. The faster the shutter speed, the more action can be stopped.
