Photography Flashcards
Why might it be important to manually focus a macro lens
Autofocus may not focus on the intended part of the image, whereas with a manual focus you can ensure it does. This is especially important as the depth of field is likely to be shallow
What does TTL stand for
Through the Lens
If bruising or swelling masks an injury which has broken the skin, what photography technique can be used to capture the mark
Ultra-Violet Photography
A victim of an assault wears glasses and needs their facial injuries photographed, what is the correct method?
One with glasses and one without
When taking long exposure images, why is it best to avoid having light sources present
As the light will cause over exposure due to the slow shutter speed letting in too much light and cause hotspots with data lost
Why might an aperture of F11 be a good starting guide for crime scene photography?
For a good depth of field
Why must all files on a camera never be deleted?
Contravenes Home Office Digital Imaging Procedures and Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996
Explain Ambient Light
It is the natural lighting already in the scene without adding a torch or flash
2 times you would use a tripod
1:1 Images
When taking photos in low light with a long exposure
When photographing the front of a building, how can distortion be avoided?
Use 35mm or above
Stand as far back as possible and take the photo front on and at straight angle
Which lens or focal length is best for providing detail
Macro Lens or 35mm
What problem may occur when photographing a window with flash
Hotspots in the reflection of the glass causing a loss of data in the image
What is the slowest shutter speed which can be used when hand holding the camera?
1/60
If there is an area flashing on the highlight loss indicator when reviewing an image, what does this mean?
The area is overexposed, so no data has been collected in that part of the image,
An inspector wants you to photograph how dark a scene is, how would you do this?
You cannot do this, it is not possible to photograph darkness levels
Explain the term aperture
How wide the lens is open through which light passes
What two pieces of equipment should be used to prevent camera shake when taking long exposure images?
Tripod
A remote shutter control
Name one advantage and one disadvantage to using a wide-angle lens or focal length
Advantage: can fit more in the image
Disadvantage: causes distortion
A crime scene includes a room with large windows, it is half lit with sunlight leaving half the room in shadow. Describe the process to balance the light.
Spot meter to 0 on the brightest point in the scene according to the light meter
Compose the shot
Add flash to the darker areas
Name three types of evidential marks that can be photographed for 1:1 comparison
Footwear marks Toolmarks Fingermarks Tyre Marks Bite marks/injury
What are the main five Home Office Imaging Procedures
Obtain Authority Start your audit trail Check Equipment is operational Take pictures but do not delete any Copy all files to storage (master and working copies)
What does highlights on the image review?
Once the photo has been taken it will show any areas which are over exposed and there is no data captured. If this area of the image is important then another photo should be taken.
What is does a histogram show on the cameras image review?
is a digital readout of the colour and light in the image
What shape is a lens?
Convex
