Photoelectric effect Flashcards
Describe the photoelectric effect
Photons transfer their energy to an electron in a 1:1 interaction
If energy is greater than work function, the electron leaves the surface of the metal.
What is the electron volt?
An eV is defined as the work done moving an electron through a PD of 1V
What is the work function?
The minimum energy needed for an electron to escape from the metal surface
What is the threshold frequency?
The minimum frequency of raditation required to cause an electron on the surface of a metal to be emitted
Describe intensity in relation to the photoelectric effect
Intensity of the light source is proportional to the number of electrons leaving provided the frequency is high enough
How do you convert the electron volt to joules?
1eV = 1.60x 10^-19J 1J = 6.25x 10^18eV
