Photo And Plant Transport Flashcards
Why are leaves green?
They contain chloroplast with chlorophyll which is a green pigment
Leaf features
Thin and fat - large surface area to catch light
More chlorophyll at top of leaf which gets most light
Pores in leaf - stomata to let gases in and out
What things are needed to make food?
Carbon dioxide from the air
Water from the soil
Light trapped by a green pigment called chlorophyll
When starch is present
Yellow/brown to blue/black
Testing a leaf for starch
- Boil a leaf for 30 seconds
- Boil the leaf in ethanol for 1 minute to remove the green chlorophyll then turn off the Bunsen burner
- Dip the leaf in hot water to soften it
- Add iodine solution if the lead turns blue/black starch is present
Why boil the leaf for 30 seconds?
To kill the leaf
Boil the leaf In ethanol for 1 minute?
To remove the green chlorophyll
Dip the leaf in hot water?
To soften the leaf
Turn off the Bunsen burner when you are using ethanol?
For safety because it’s flammable
Photo means and synthesis means
Photo means light and synthesis means to make
Equation for photosynthesis
Water + carbon dioxide —
oxygen + glucose
Which structures allow gasses to pass in and out of the leaf?
Stoma
The two systems of transport in plants
- Xylem moves water and minerals from the roots to the leaves
- Phloem moves food substances from leaves to the rest of the plant
Where can you find a root hair cell
In the roots of the plants
What is root cells job
Absorb water and minerals from the soil
