PHOTO 100 Exam Flashcards
Define
Composition
The nature of something’s ingredients or constituents; how a whole or mixture is made up
Define
The Rule Of Thirds
- Divides the image into nine sections.
- Lines occur at ⅓ and ⅔ across the image, both vertically and horizontally.
It can show depth in an image and frame it to give the image height
“⅓ of sky and ⅔ of ground”
Define
Golden Spiral/Ratio
Based on the mathematical sequence of the ratio of a side split 1:1.618
The subject should ideally be in the innermost spiral of the sequence.
You can crop images to make it follow the ratio/spiral. You’re just “fixing” it.
Define
Leading Lines
Similar to symmetry except that the photographer uses lines to move your eyes through a photograph
Define
Camera Shutter
The curtain in front of the camera sensor that stays closed until the camera shutter release is pressed. It opens during exposure, allows light to enter the sensor, and then closes again.
What do Mirrorless Camera typically don’t have? How come?
No Shutters
The sensor is constantly open to light
Define
Shutter Speed
Represented by a camera in time measurements
What’s considered a slow shutter speed?
1/30 of a second
What does slow shutter speed do?
Causes the image to blur along their path
What’s considered normal shutter speed?
Between 1/30 and 1/250 of a second
What does normal shutter speed do?
Cause average moving objects to freeze in the frame
What’s considered fast shutter speed?
Speeds above 1/250 of a second
What does fast shutter speed do?
Causes fast-moving objects to freeze in the frame
Define
White Balance
The process of removing unrealistic color casts so that objects appear white in person are rendered white in your photo
What are the three color values on a camera?
Red, Green, Blue
Define
Cooling A Scene
The process of purposefully running the white balance lower on the Kelvin scale
What are the different white balance modes on a camera?
Tungsten - 32,000 K
Fluorescent - 6,000 K
Flash
Cloudy
Define
ISO
Used to standardize technology in a large scale of applications and is an electrical charge across the sensor that captures an image
(Light/Reaction)
What is the scale ISO is represented on?
100 - 3200
What is a subproperty of ISO?
Noise
What happens when an ISO increases?
The time it takes an image to “expose” decreases
Define
High Dynamic Range
A technique used in imaging and photography to reproduce a greater dynamic range of luminosity than is possible with a camera + lens combination.
Define
Bracketing
Pictures being purposefully under and over exposed to create a high developed one.
Define
Dynamic Range
Refers to the idea of “pure black” and “pure white” in a photo
