Phosphorous Flashcards
Where is phosphorous primarily found?
primarily found in bone (85%)
15% is in the ICF
____________ is a source of phosphate for ATP and phospholipid synthesis
Phosphorous
What 3 things determine the phosphorous serum level?
- Dietary intake
- renal function
- PTH levels
How is hypophosphatemia classified?
serum level < 2.5 mg/dL
How is severe hypophosphatemia classified?
< 1 mg/dL
What are some causes of hypophosphatemia?
- shift to ICF (hyperglycemia, insulin, malnutrition)
- decrease absorption (starvation, vit D deficiencym diarrhea/laxatives)
- increased renal loss
- meds
What are some meds that can cause hypophosphatemia?
diuretics sucralfate steroids antacids phenobarb/phenytoin
What is the key electrolyte to monitor when you start a pt on IV nutrition?
phosphate
What is the clinical presentation of hypophosphatemia?
paresthesias muscle weakness, myalgias anorexia, N/V impaired diaphragmatic contractility acute respiratory failure seizures, coma
How is moderate hypophosphatemia treated?
Classified as 1-2.5 mg/dL
oral products
Neutra-phos, K-phos
watch for diarrhea
How do you treat severe or critically ill patients due to hypophosphatemia?
dd
