Received Pronunciation (RP)
an accent that is often seen as evidence of a good education and is associated with authority, status and power. Only 2% of the population speak this.
Bradford phoneme variations
- In words such as ‘city’ the final sound is pronounced /I/
- words such as ‘make’ and ‘take’ are pronounced /mek/ and /tek/
London and the South East
- ‘dance and bath’, the vowel sound is /a:/
- ‘thin’ becomes /fin/
Liverpool
-there is no contrast between pairs of words like ‘fair’ and ‘fir’
Estuary English (1980s)
they way in which London accents were spreading to regions adjoining the Thames Estuary. More recently, it describes the accent adopted by people as a conscious move away from RP

a variety of language used by a particular group of people, which has distinctive features of vocabulary and grammar

a set of pronunciation features which help to indicate a person’s geographical origin and/or their social class
