What is phonological development?
How children acquire the sounds of English.
First stage? When are they made?
Biological Noises, 0-8 weeks old.
Second stage? When are they made?
Cooing and Laughing, 6-8 weeks old.
Third stage?
Vocal Play.
Fourth stage? When are they made?
Babbling, around 6 months old.
Fifth stage? When are they made?
Melodic Utterance, 9-18 months old.
When do babies recognise the sound of their mother’s voice?
From birth - this settles at 3 days. Being in the womb helps baby recognise rhythm of mother’s speech.
What are the two types of babbling?
Reduplicated and variegated.
What is the difference between babbling and melodic utterance?
Babbling is more experimental whereas melodic utterance is a deliberate attempt at communication.
