What are the criteria for identifying true words?
Not imitation
Multiple uses in a similar context
Some similarity to the adult production
Used consistently for an identified referent
Stage 1-pre speech stage. Understand the course of developing during the first year. Be able to compare the two types of babbling
The age of learning to use the articulators
7-10 months: reduplicated (canonical) babbling stage
11-14 months: variegated babbling stage
Why is it difficult to identify the first true words?
- Babbling
- Protowords (doesn’t sound like adult production)
- True words
- Imitation
What are protowords? (Invented words) and progressive and regressive idioms?
Progressive idioms: words with more advanced phonetic accuracy (compared to age)
Regressive idioms: words with less phonetic accuracy (compared to age) aka fossilized forms
