Phoneme
The basic unit of sound

A basic unit of sound that is an actual word
Sound symbolism
Describes how sounds are used to represent actual events and to mirror the actions they describe. Covers both sound patterning and the way sound patterning is structured
Lexical onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia that is an actual word
Non-lexical onomatopoeia
Onomatopoeia that isn’t an actual word
Assonance
Repetition of vowel sounds for effect
Consonance
Repetition of consonant vowels
Sibilance
Sounds produced by ‘s’ sound
Alliteration
Words beginning with the same letter
Phonological manipulation
Sounds used in language often need only to be altered slightly to create a comical effect
Homophone
Same pronunciation but different spelling
Phonemic substitution
One phoneme replacing another for a desired effect
