Phonics Flashcards
phonics
an instructional approach to teach children how to match sounds to letters in order to read and write words
short vowel sound
the vowel sounds in the words cat, bed, pig, pot, and up
long vowel sound
the sound a vowel makes when it “says its name” like in the words rain, seen, chime, smoke and blue
consonant blend
two or three consonants that go together, but you can still hear both original sounds
consonant digraph
two consonants that go together to make a new sound (ch, th, wh, sh, ph)
silent e rule
when you have one vowel letter, then one consonant letter, and then an e, the e is silent and the vowel is long.
open syllable
when a syllable ends with a single vowel letter, the vowel will be long
closed syllable
when a syllable ends with a single vowel letter and then a single consonant, the vowel will be short
long vowel team
when there are two vowels together, the first vowel is long (ex. ai, ea, oa)
variant vowel teams
when there are two vowels together that make a new sound (oo, au, aw)
dipthongs
when two vowels are together and make a sound that slides from one vowel sound to another one (oi, oy, ou, ow like cow)
r-controlled vowels
a vowel followed by an r makes a different sound (ar, ir, er, ur, or)
