phonetics vocab Flashcards
International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA)
established transcription system which have a separate symbol for each sound
frequency
the number of waves that pass a fixed point in unit time
vocal tract
entire passage above the larynx where speech is shaped
articulator
all parts of the vocal apparatus which
are involved in speech production
place of articulation
the point of contact, where an obstruction occurs in the vocal tract between an active and passive articulator
bilabial
the articulators are both lips
ex. “b” “p” “m”
alveolar
obstruction at the alveolar ridge
labio-dental
articulators are bottom lip and top front teeth
ex. “f”
dental
atriculators are teeth, no lip involvement
ex. “th”
palato-alveolar
constriction is between the hard palate and the alveolar ridge
ex. “sh”
manner of atriculation
The various production methods of consonants
fricatives
Consonants produced by air passing through a slight opening, the result is audible friction
ex. “f”
affricates
combine two different manners of production: a stoppage of the airflow, followed by a prolonged release with only a narrow opening and therefore audible friction.
approximants
the articulators approach each other, but do not cause a strong constriction in the vocal tract
nasals
class of consonants in which the velum is lowered, leaving an open passage from the oral to the nasal cavity, so that the air can escape through the nose
