Phonetics
The study of speech sounds and how they are produced, transmitted and received.
Phonology
the study of the sound system of a language.
Prosodic features
Phonological properties that relate to the pronunciations of syllables, words and phrases. SPITV
Pitch
refers to the height of sound in auditory terms, from low to high.
Stress
The degree of strength used to pronounce a syllable.
Intonation
The pattern of pitch changes in speech. Provides grammatical information and speakers attitude. High rising terminal- asking questions
Volume
How loud or how quietly the speech is spoken
Tempo
The rate of speed at which the speech is spoken at.
phonological patterning
Refers to sound patterns used in language to create stylistic effects.
ROACRA
Rhythm
patterns of stressed/unstressed syllables in speech. It is a stylistic device common in songs and poetry
Assonance
- Repetition of identical vowel phonemes within words

Consonance
- repetetion of consonant phonemes within words

Rhyme
- repetition of word endings that have similar phonemes
- makes text memorable and catches attenetion

- use of word formed by imiation of sound

- repetition of initial consonant phoneme
