What three dimensions are used to describe consonant articulation?
Place of articulation, manner of articulation, and voicing
What does place of articulation mean
where in the mouth is the sound produced

A manner of articulation is the way that sounds are formed and produced
What does voicing mean?
Voiced consonants require vocal cords to produce their signature sounds; voiceless consonants do not.

stops, fricatives, affricates, nasals, liquids, glides
What is a stop/plosive?
a stop consonant is the sound made by completely blocking the flow of air and then releasing it
Bilabial stops (2):
P (voiceless) and b(voiced)
Alveolar stops (2)
t (voiceless) and d (voiced)
Velar stops
k (voiceless) and g (voiced)
What is fricatives?
sound produced by bringing the mouth into position to block the passage of the airstream but not making complete closure

Interdental fricatives
