Phonemic and Phonological Awareness Flashcards
the study of speech sounds and how they change depending on certain situations or placements in syllables, words, and sentences
Phonology
the study of speech sounds as they stand in isolation
Phonetics
the way phonologists predict how a speech sound will change depending on its position in various speech environments
Phonological rules
the study of the rules that describe the grammatical arrangement of words and phrases in a language
syntax
the study of the formation and structure of words
morphology
the smallest meaningful speech sounds in a vocal language
Phonemes
different variants of the same phoneme
Allophones
short segments of language that are part of a word or may be words themselves
Morphemes
recalling sound/symbol relationships
phonics
the ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds in speech
Phonemic awareness
the ability to track specific words in a sentence. Most children acquire this ability between 1.5 and 2 years.
Word awareness
How many different phonemes are there in the English language?
between 40 and 50 - 26 letters in the alphabet, along with blends of multiple letters
the 26 letters of the alphabet, as well as the combinations they make, represent different sounds of the English language.
alphabetic principle (phonics)
the first level of phonemic awareness; involves hearing the individual letter sounds on their own.
isolation
the second level of phonemic awareness; the combination of isolated phonemes in a small word in which each letter stands on its own and is not blended.
blending
