Define phobias, emotions, behaviours, and cognitive
Phobias - irrational fear of an object / situation.
Behavioural- how people act
Emotional - how people feel
cognitive- how people think ie) seeing, perceiving and believing
What are the behavioural characteristics of phobias?
P.A.E
PANIC - cry, freeze, etc
AVOIDANCE- Avoid phobic stimulus
ENDURANCE- Remain in its presence but still with high level of anxiety ie) flying
What are the emotional characteristics of phobias?
Anxiety - phobias are an anxiety disorder, the response to them is fear.
Example - Arachnophobia
Emotional responses are unreasonable ie) w/ arachnophobia.
What are the cognitive characteristics of phobias?
Selective attention paid to the phobic stimulus - not useful when fear is irrational ie in pognophobics. (beard fear)
Irrational beliefs - ie) to not blush and to always sound intelligent (in social phobias)
Cognitive distortions- ie) tripophobic can see holes as scary and weird
