- Accept the pt and their fears with a non-critical attitude
- provide and involve pt in activities that do not increase anxiety
- Increase involvement rather than promote avoidance
- Help pts with physical safety and comfort needs
- Help pt recognize that their behavior is a method of avoiding anxiety
