Phloem structures and function Flashcards
1
Q
what is the Phloem?
A
a tube formed from elongated living cells called sieve tubes
2
Q
No nucleus or organelles why?
A
the phloem only has a thing layer of cytoplasm around the edges to maximise space for mass flow
3
Q
why does the phloem have sieve plates?
A
sieve plates contain pores which allows solutes to pass through easily.
4
Q
what is the sieve elements made up of?
A
made up of individual phloem cells has plasmodesmata which connects it to the companion cells
5
Q
structures of companion cells?
A
thick cellulose cells walls and contain all organelles. a lot of mitochondria to provide ATP for translocation
connected to sieve elemnts through plasmodesmata
