Mind-Body Problem
Concerns the relationship between mental processes and the physical world.
Dualism
Belief in the fundamental difference between mind (non-physical) and matter (physical).
Substance Dualism
Mind and body are distinct substances. Associated with René Descartes.
Property Dualism
Mental states are non-physical properties of physical substances.
Physicalism
The mind is fundamentally physical.
Reductive Physicalism
Mental states can be reduced to physical states.
Non-Reductive Physicalism
Mental states are physical but not reducible to physical properties.
Idealism
Reality is fundamentally mental or spiritual.
Consciousness
The state of being aware of and able to think about one’s own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.
Qualia
Subjective, individual experiences (‘what it’s like’ aspect).
Hard Problem of Consciousness
Explaining how and why we have qualia or subjective experiences.
Theories of Consciousness
Various models trying to explain consciousness (e.g., Integrated Information Theory, Global Workspace Theory).
Intentionality
The quality of mental states that are about, or directed at, things or states of affairs.
Aboutness
The aspect of mental states being directed at or about something.
Theories of Intentionality
Various models explaining how mind represents objects and states (e.g., Representationalism).
