Substance dualism
The belief that a living thing has two distinct elements - body and soul - and the soul can exist without the body. The body and soul are wholly different substances.
Mind-brain dualism
The belief that the mind and body are distinct entities, which can interact with the worl separateky, but only whilst the physical body is alive
Monism
The belief that a living thing has two elements - body and soul - but the soul cannot exist without the body. They are inseparable.
Materialism
The belief that a living thing has only one element - the body. We are just matter, nothing more.
Reductionism
The belief that everything can be reduced to statements about physical bodies
Disembodied existence
The idea that we are able to exist in some form without our bodies. Disembodied existence is closely linked to dualism
Traducianism
The belief that souls are passed down from parents, rather than uniquely created by God. We inherit our souls
Transmigration
The idea that the soul can ‘migrate’, move or transfer from one embodied existence to another
Consciousness
The state of being aware and responsive to your surroundings
Indissoluble
Cannot be destroyed
