Retribution
Punish people who commit crimes because they deserve it; choice v. harm based
Utilitarian Theories
Promote the greatest good for the greatest number of people
Deterrence
Justifies punishments on the grounds and to the extent that it deters people from committing crime in the future
Incapacitation
Justifies punishment on the grounds that it stops or incapacitated people from committing crimes
Rehabilitation
Make the offender less likely to offend again; used in juvenile court
Restorative Justice
Repairing the harm done by the offense thereby restoring the state of affairs that existed before the crime had been committed
Expressive Punishment
Express society’s denunciation of a crime
Mixed Theory of Punishment
Mix and match different theories; care deeply about right and wrong BUT also deterring crime
Critical Theory
More sociological approach
