- PAL served the Papacy when Saint (then Pope) John Paul II came to the Philippines on a 6-day pastoral visit. Three PAL aircraft, namely a Boeing 727-200, a McDonnell Douglas DC-10 and a NAMC YS-11, proudly wore Viva II Papa decals as they carried of the papal mission, covering 7,954 kilometres with domestic flights to Cebu, Davao, Bacolod, Iloilo, Legazpi, Subic Bay, and Baguio, as well as foreign legs to Guam and Tokyo

- Andres Soriano, Sr. Founded PAL
- Soriano was elected as PAL’s President
- First Transpacific Crossing. PAL became the first Asian Airline to cross the pacific. The flight carried 40 homeward-bound American services on a 41 hour journey from Manila, making stopovers in Guam, Kwajalein, and Honolulu before arriving in Oakland, California. The flight was performed by a Douglas DC-4 chartered from Transocean Airlines.

FIRST EUROPEAN SERVICE. A PAL DC-4 took off from Nielson Airport on the long journey to Madrid, Spain, with stops in Bangkok, Calcutta, Karachi, Dhahran, Cairo, and Rome. PAL made history as the First Southeast Asian Airline to fly to Europe
