According to Genty, the stage is?
A “platform for the subconscious”
List some theatrical styles used
Dance, circus, puppetry, magician (disinclined to embrace labels)
Narrative?
Non-linear, likeness to a dream landscape, dance and objects create a synaesthetic experience
Why the use of marionettes/puppets?
Create a distorted perception of reality with larger-than-life characters, boundaries between reality and dreams overlooked
What is Genty’s creative process?
- Begins with a series of writings and sketches
- Brainstorms the environment (dreamlike, constantly evolving scenery)
- Many scenes created for the set, less than half actually used
Why the constantly changing scenery?
So the set is open to audience interpretation and is unique to each individual
What is the rehearsal process?
Dispersion, cross-over, rewriting, evaluation.
Don’t cry, regret end.
Genty’s birth?
December 1st 1938, France
What is dispersion?
Early stage, actors start with theme and sometimes props. Improvisation of scenes and movements, resisting “limitations of the script and the restrictions of the decor”
What is cross-over?
Script is deconstructed, new ideas used
What is evaluation?
Final scenes are run through in front of an audience to ensure actors connect and the audience understands
What is rewriting?
Improvised scenes are rewritten and developed further. New props used to work on abstract ideas.
