Red stopper tubes
Do not contain an anticoagulant, used to obtain clotted blood or serum.
Red/gray tube
Used to obtain serum. Contain clot activator.
Lavender tubes
Contain the anticoagulant EDTA. Used to collect whole blood or plasma. (CBC)
Light blue tube
Contain the anticoagulant sodium citrate. Used to collect whole blood or plasma, commonly used for quite elation tests such as PT.
Green tubes
Contain the anticoagulant heparin, commonly used to collect blood specimens to perform blood gas determinations and pH essays.
Great tubes
Contain sodium fluoride as a preservative and potassium oxalate as an anticoagulant. These tubes are used to obtain whole blood or plasma, commonly used to perform oral glucose tolerance test.
Royal blue tubes
Contain either EDTA or no additive it all these tubes are made of a specifically or find glass and a rubber stopper. Used for the detection of trace elements such as lead, zinc, arsenic, and copper.
Order of draw
Blood culture tubes (yellow stopper).
Coagulation tubes (light blue stoppers).
Serum tubes (red or red gray, gold)
Anticoagulant tubes (in the following order: green, lavender, royal blue, gray.
Intramuscular injection
90° angle
Subcutaneous injection
45° angle
Intradermal injection
10 to 15° angle
