Pheromones, Hormones & Genes Flashcards
What is are pheromones?
Pheromones are chemical messengers that are emitted into the environment from the body where they can then activate specific physiological or behavioural responses in other individuals of the same species
What is a chromosome?
Chromosomes are thread-like structures in which DNA is tightly packaged within the nucleus. DNA is coiled around proteins called histones, which provide the structural support. Chromosomes help ensure that DNA is replicated and distributed appropriately during cell division.
What is a gene?
the functional units of heredity; they are composed of DNA and specify the structure of proteins that encode for a specific trait or function
What is an allele?
one of the alternate types of a gene and can be recessive or dominant
What is gene expression?
the process where genotype becomes manifested as phenotype
What is a phenotype?
the set of traits that actually manifest in an individual’s body, appearance, or behavior; the physical traits that appear in an individual as a result of its gentic make up
What is DNA?
The chromosomal molecule that transfers genetic characteristics by way of coded instructions for the structure of proteins
What it heredity?
the way that genes and therefore characteristics are passed from one generation to the next
What is a genotype?
An organism’s genetic makeup, or allele combinations.
