Phenylephrine Flashcards
What is the brand/trade name for phenylephrine?
What is the pharmacologic category/class of phenylephrine?
- synthetic non-catecholamine
- highly selective direct alpha-1 agonist
What is the mechanism of action of phenylephrine?
- Alpha-1 stimulation causes increased release of calcium from intracellular stores → venous > arterial vasoconstriction
Similar effects as norepi, but less potent and longer lasting
What is the bolus dose range of phenylephrine for hypotension during anesthesia?
- 50-200 mcg, repeated q1-2 minutes
What is the dose range of a phenylephrine infusion for hypotension during anesthesia?
- 20-200 mcg/min, titrated to effect
What is the onset of action for phenylephrine?
What is the duration of action for phenylephrine?
- 5-20 minutes
Norepi is only 1-2 minutes
What organ(s) are responsible for phenylephrine’s clearance (metabolism/elimination)?
- Metabolism: Liver (P450)
- Elimination: Kidneys
Baroreceptor responses to phenylephrine frequently cause __________
- bradycardia
rarely given to peds for this reason, as they are reliant on HR for CO
