Phenomenology And Ethnomethodology (EM) Flashcards
What is Husserl’s Philosophy?
The world makes sense because we impose meaning and order onto it by making categories that we use to classify information
This is the only ways to gain knowledge
Schutz’s typifications and example
These are shared categories which allow us to organise experiences but the meaning of any experience variesaccording to social context.
e.g. raising hand in class vs at an auction
Schutz’s natural altitude
This is what we adopt when the results we get the expected from our actions
e.g. we assume the social world is fluid because everyone shares the same meanings
Advantage (berger and luckmann)
Schutz is right to focus on shared knowledge
Disadvantage (berger and luckmann) and example
Once society is constructed, it takes on a mind of its own
e.g. religious ideas impact laws like bigamy
What is social order? (Garfinkle- EM)
An accomplishment that people work towards using commonsense knowledge
(EM) Indexicality
Meanings are unclear and dependent on context. This is a potential threat to social order because if meanings are not shared, cooperation becomes difficult to achieve
(EM) Reflexivity
Refers to the idea that we use commonsense knowledge in everyday interactions and construct a sense of meaning to prevent indexicality
