Procedure of the Phelps & Sharot Study

- Begins with 24 participants being asked to recall the events 9/11 as well as other memories during the summer.
- Their brains were scanned with an MRI as the participants retrieved their memories.
- Participants were then asked about vividness and emotional arousal of the event.

- Showed activity in the hippocampus of the participants’ brain in midtown who learned about the attacks through media.
- Participants downtown recalled the attacks and showed activity in the amygdala.
