Phases Flashcards
Define a phase diagram:
- A phase diagram is a graphical representation of the physical states of a substance under different conditions of temperature and pressure.
- A typical phase diagram has pressure on the y-axis and temperature on the x-axis. As we cross the lines or curves on the phase diagram, a phase change occurs.
- Two states of the substance coexist in equilibrium on the lines or curves.
Analyze the Phase Diagram
- Triple point: Point at which the three states of matter: gas, liquid, and solid coexist
- Critical point: Point at which the substance is indistinguishable between liquid and gaseous states
Define Sublimation:
When a substance goes directly from a solid to a gas state
Define Deposition:
When a substance goes directly from a gas to a solid state
Defnie Melting:
When a substance goes from a solid to a liquid state
Define Fusion:
When a substance goes from a liquid to a solid state
Define Vaporization:
When a substance goes from a liquid to a gas state
Define Condensation:
When a substance goes from a gas to a liquid state
Define Critical Temperature:
Temperature above which the liquid phase of a substance cannot exist, regarless of the pressure applied
Define Critical Pressure:
Minimum pressure required to liquefy a gas at its critical temperature
