Phase the Fourth "the consequence" Flashcards
‘I am not good-enough, not worthy enough’
Tess tells angel she is not worthy of his love - doesnt yet explain why.
‘He seemed to be her double’ her crime was ‘just the same’
Tess on Angel before the confessions (irony, Hardy narrating?)
she thinks because he did the same he will be forced to forgive- not the case
“O Angel I am almost glad because now ou can forgive me”
Except he wont, because of societal double standards.
- Hardy sets Angel up as a hypocrite, angel willingl had premarital sex and tess was able to forgive him, yet tess was raped and angel is unable to ‘forgive’ her.
- Whilst Angel can be seen as a viallin in some aspects because of his hypocracy and his actions (going to brazil etc), society is the true villain as angels views of tess and tess’ views of herself come from society and the narrow minded Victorian societal expectations of women.
