Phase Equilibria Flashcards
What is the partition coefficient? What is it’s associated eqn?
The ratio of the concentrations of a solute in two immiscible/ slightly miscible liquids, or in two solids, when it is in equilibrium across the interface between them.
K = [solute]solvent A ➗ [solute]solvent B
What are liquids which don’t mix with each other said to be?
Immiscible
What is chromatography?
A technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in sol in which the components move at diff rates
What do all chromatographic methods involve?
A mobile phase moving over a stationary phase
Why does separation occur during chromatography ?
Because the substances in the mix have diff partition coefficients between the stationary and mobile phases
In gas liquid chromatography what is the mobile and stationary phase?
Mobile = a gas (the carrier gas) Stationary= a high boiling pt liquid held on an inert! finely powdered support material
