Patrolling definition
Detachment of ground, sea, or air to gather info or conduct destructive, harassing, mopping up, or security mission.
Patrol Classification
MOVEMENT Foot mobile Motorized Helicopter borne Waterborne
MISSION
Recon and combat patrols are the mission
Recon Patrols
Route- specific route along specific line of communication. Precludes friendly movements
Area- prescribed area, often with goal of being undetected
Zone- all routes and areas feasible.
Combat Patrols
Actively engage enemy
Security Patrol- detect infiltration, destroy infiltrators, protect against surprise and ambush. Should try to avoid decisive engagement.
Contact Patrol- establish and or maintain contact with enemy force.Often patrol the front flanks and rear of a friendly movement.
Ambush- surprise attack
Composition of a Patrol
Security Unit- provides security to front and flanks. Upon contact they isolate enemy, secure objective rally point and cover withdrawal of support unit.
Assault Unit- Provides rear security, maneuver unit, upon contact they engage enemy, assault through objective, emplace any demolition.
Support Unit- Control speed and direction, flank security, comm with higher, upon contact direct movement, establish objective rally point.
Attachments- execute non organic tasks
Battalion Adj (S-1)
personnel accountability, you provide your roster to this person
Intelligence officer (S-2)
update on enemy, provide imagery, and any info requirements
Operations officer (S-3)
can update on friendlies, submit your overlays to this person
Fire support coordinator (FSC)
who you give your plans to
Logistics (s-4)
provides all logistics support for patrol
Communications officer (S-6)
provides reporting requirements, frequencies, call signs
Forward unit coordination (FUC)
movement within friendly areas
Departure/ reentry of friendly areas
Company coordination
PL goes to XO to submit patrol overlay and coordinate, and the mortar section for fire support and overlay.
Halts
Listening- conducted 1 terrain feature from friendly lines
Short- 3 to 5 minutes or less, security in place
Long- longer than 5 minutes, 360 security in prone
Rally Points
Initial Rally point- within friendly lines
En Route Rally Point- between initial and objective rally point.
Objective Rally Point- located close to where the patrol makes final prep, also where you return to upon completion of objective.
Ground Tactical Plan
developed before air support, must include go / no go criteria
Landing Plan
In general a wave should be at least platoon size. should include prep fires, preplanned “on call” targets, all fire support assets. An alternate LZ must be planned for.
Air movement plan
based on ground tactical plan, altitudes airspeeds, includes ingress and egress routes.
Loading Plan
maintain unit integrity, stay mission capable.

mask carried, permeable ensemble available in two hrs, second in six

chemical agents
persistent > 12 hrs air bursting ground contaminating
Non-Persistent < 12 hrs ground bursting air contaminating
Nerve agents
Attack signals in nervous system, transmitted through eyes, skin, and respiratory. Severe casualties need buddy aid
non persistent - TAbun GA, Sarin GB, SomanGD, Cyclosarin GF
Persistent - VX, Vx Gas, GX2 binary agent.
Blood Agents
Prevent cell respiration and transfer of oxygen to body tissue, transported through eyes-moderate, respiratory- main entrance.
All are non-persistent
Blister Agents
All are persistent, can be passed through all areas
Choking Agents
through respiratory system. pulmonary adema, drowning on dry land
Biological Agents
Pathogens- disease producing
Toxins- byproducts of microorganisms, plants and animals
Detection kits
M256A1- 12 disposable sampler and M8 paper, do not hold in direct sunlight
M8 paper- cannot be used to detect chemical agents in water or oil
M9 paper- will not stick to greasy surfaces won’t detect agents in water, can’t be read by color blind or under red light.
