Pharynx Flashcards
The pharynx is composed of
skeletal muscle and lined with mucous membranes
The pharynx permits the passage of
swallowed solids and liquids into the esophagus
What is the esophagus and where does it lie?
The esophagus is a collapsible, muscular tube that lies posterior to the trachea and connects the pharynx to the stomach
Pharynx (activity) pharyngeal stage of
Pharyngeal stage of deglutition
What is the function of the pharynx? In terms of bolus
Moves bolus from oropharynx to laryngopharynx and into esophagus; closes air passageways.
Esophagus activities
- Basically relaxes your upper and lower esophageal sphincters
Relaxation of upper esophageal sphincter.
-Esophageal stage of Pushes bolus down esophagus. deglutition (peristalsis).
- Relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter —
*Secretion of mucus
Esophagus- relaxation of upper
esophageal sphincter;
Permits entry of bolus from laryngopharynx into esophagus
Esophagus- The esophageal stage of deglutition (peristalsis)
Pushes bolus down esophagus
Esophagus- relaxation of lower esophageal sphincter
Permits entry of bolus into stomach
Esophagus: Secretion of mucus
Lubricates esophagus for smooth passage of bolus
gastroesophageal reflux disease occurs when
lower esophageal sphincter fails to close
adequately after food has entered the stomach
