Unlicensed personnel can assist pharmacists by performing what duties?
Receiving written or electronically transmitted prescriptions, typing prescription labels, entering date into a computer-generated file, retrieving data from a computer-generated file, retrieving drugs from stock, locating/retrieving prescriptions, and other records, counting dosage units of drugs, placing dosage units in containers, affixing labels to the containers, preparing manual dispensing records for the pharmacist’s signature, handling or delivering completed prescriptions.
What is the max ratio of unlicensed persons (ex. technicians) to pharmacists?
As of April 2021, it has increased from 2:1 to 4:1. No more than 2 may be registered.
What duties are technicians restricted from performing?
Receiving oral prescriptions, evaluating prescriptions for conformance with legal requirements, authenticity, accuracy, and drug interactions, making determination of therapeutic equivalency, measuring, weighing, compounding, or mixing ingredients, signing or initialing a record of dispensing, counseling patients, performing functions that require professional judgment.
**Exception as of April 2021: Only in hospitals and health-systems, registered techs are allowed to compound.
