What is ethics ?
Ethics is the discipline concerned with the study of moral principles, values and rules
They guide human conduct and behaviour addressing questions of what is morally wrong and right
What are morals?
Morals are beliefs about what is right and wrong behaviour often guided by societal, cultural or religious influences
What are values ?
Values are deeply held principles or standards that guide personal behaviour and decision making
What do pharmacy ethics consist of ?
Morality, safety, validity, law, good practice and integrity
What does pharmacy ethics involve ?
It involves the examination and application of ethical principles to situations and dilemmas unique to the pharmacy profession
What are some ethical dilemmas ?
Rights of a child , assisted reproduction, rights of an unborn, right to refuse treatment, rights to die, medical research etc
What is ethical dilemma
A complex situation or moral conflict in which a person or group of individuals faces a difficult choice between two or more courses of action each of which has ethical and moral implications
What is the theory deontology ?
Actions are performed out of duty or moral obligation
It asserts that actions are morally right if they adhere to established rules regardless of the consequences
What is virtue ?
Places value on the moral character of the action rather than acts or outcomes of acts
What is non maleficence?
To not cause harm, includes both acts and omissions could include withholding treatment that harms patients
What is beneficence ?
Promotes the well being of others benefits to the patient
Acting without consent or overriding a persons wishes, wants or actions in order to benefit the patient and prevent harm
What is respect for autonomy?
Rights of a competent adult to make informed decisions including to refuse treatment
Self determination, an individuals actions out to be the result of his or her own choices
What is justice ?
Fairness - distribute health and care resources, treat similar cases in similar ways, same respect to patients in different circumstances
What are the four biomedical ethical principles ?
Non- maleficence , beneficence, autonomy, justice
