Pharmacology of Alimentary Flashcards
What are the maind drug classes used in treatment of GI disease?
1) Acid suppressants - PPI’s, Antacids, H2-receptor antagonists
2) Motility drugs - anti-motility, anti-spasmodics
3) Laxatives
What are the classes of drugs used for inflammatory bowel disorders?
1) Aminosalicylates
2) Corticosteroids
3) Immunosuppressants
4) Biologics
How do H2 receptor antagonists work?
Block the histamine receptor therefore reducing acid secretion
How do GI motility drugs work?
They block opiate receptors in GI tract to decrease ACh release and therefore decrease smooth muscle contraction and increase anal sphincter tone
How do anti-spasmodic drugs work?
1) Anti-cholinergic effects - smooth muscle relaxation
How do laxatives work?
1) Increasing bulk
2) Drawing fluid into gut
What is a common aminosalicylate drug?
Mesalazine
What is a common immunosuppressant drug given for inflammatory bowel disorders?
Azathioprine - inhibits purine synthesis
What is the common biologic drug used in IBD?
Infliximab
