Pharmacology Exam 1 Flashcards
Epinephrine
Increases blood pressure via activation of alpha and beta receptors.
Increase HR, BP Inotropy
Dobutamine (Dobutrex)
Selective B1 agonist
Used in treatment of shock and cardiac arrest. Used in short term tx of heart failure and stress test
Can’t be given orally
Albuterol (Proventil; Ventolin)
Selective B2 agonist used to treat asthma
Side effects of increased HR, elevated blood glucose levels and skeletal muscle tremor.
Contraindicated in cardiac disease and diabetes
Phenylephrine
Selective A1 receptor agonist to treat hypotension. Contraindicated in hypertension and use of MAO inhibitors
Clonidine (Catapres)
- A2 receptor agonist
- treats hypertension by suppressing sympathetic outflow
- Tx eye irritation via vasoconstriction in eye blood vessels
Phenelzine (Nardil)
-MAO inhibitors increase action of catecholamines by inhibiting MAO degradation. Used to treat depression. Indirect acting drug that should be avoided by foods rich in dietary amines (wine, cheese, and beer)
Methylphenidate (Ritalin)
Bind to VMAT and NET to cause reverse catecholamine transport. Indirect acting symphathomimetic drug that treats ADHD.
Side effects of HTN, Tachycardia, insomnia and GI problems. Oral Admin
Propanolol (Inderal)
Non-selective B receptor antagonist
Used to treat HTN, Heart Disease, angina, cardiac arrhythmias and muscle tremor. Taken orally. Contraindicated by asthma
