  • This drug inhibits the reabsorption of uric acid in the kidney and thus increases the excretion of uric acid
  • Works by binding to the special transporter protein in the proximal convoluted renal tubule that takes uric acid from the urine and places it back into the blood
  • Then is reabsorbed into the bloodstream while the uric acid remains in the urine and is excreted

-Used to treat hyperuricemia associated with gout and gouty arthritis, It also has the ability to delay the renal excretion of penicillin, which increases the serum levels of penicillin and prolongs its effect

-Contraindications: Peptic ulcer disease, and blood dyscrasias

  • Ineffective and is not to be used in patients with renal impairment
  • Categorized as a pregnancy category B drug
