Pharmacology Flashcards
Loading Dose
Initial dose given to get drug concentration to therapeutic range within a short period.
1 unit = ? mls
0.1 ml
Parenteral
Route other than GI
Onset of Action
Begins when drug enters plasma and starts taking effect
Six Patient Rights
Right Drug, Dose, Time, Route, Patient, and Document
Therapeutic Index (Margin of Safety)
The ability of a drug to produce the desired effect with minimal or no toxicity.
Lethal Dose
(LD50)- dose that kills 50% of receiving animals
Effective dose
(ED50)- dose that produces desired effect in 50% of receiving animals
The FDA does not cover these:
biologics and pesticides
Half Life
Time required for the amount of drug in the body to be reduced by half its original level.
Primary sites of drug excretion
kidneys, liver
Glucuronyl Transferase
Enzyme that helps dogs and humans use aspirin- cats have much less of this
Conjugation
Reaction that breaks down drug to allow it to bond with glucuronic acid
Reduction
Gaining an electron resulting in negative charge
Oxidation
Loss of an electron resulting in a positive charge
