Pharmacology Flashcards
Drug action can be divided into 3 distinct phases:
- pharmaceutical
- pharmacokinetic
- pharmacodynamic
What is the pharmaceutical phase?
The method by which a drug is delivered to the body,
What is the pharmacokinetic phase?
What the body does with the drug e.g • absorption • action • distribution • metabolisation • excretion
What is the pharmacodynamics phase?
The mechanism of action by which the dug has it’s therapeutic effect.
Why are inhaled medications used?
Inhaled drugs are delivered direct to the site they’re needed, with a rapid onset of action and reduction in side effects as smaller doses can be used.
What is inertial impaction?
The principle means of deposition of the majority of particles within the respiratory tract. When the particles inertia is too great to allow it to continue to flow with the airstream it becomes lodged in the airway.
How can bronchodilators be classified?
1) Adrenoreceptor agonists
2) Anticholinergics
3) Methylxanthines
