Pharmacology Flashcards
Why eye drugs be different from skin stuff
eye drugs are specially formed to be physiologically similiar to the eye and tears so dont damage and irriate the eye
silver nitrate vs erythomycin to prevent newborns developing eye infections
silver nitrate produces conjunctival irriation and swellling and can interfere with mother child bond
erythomicin does not produce irriation
3 categories of drugs used to treat allergy symptoms
antihistamine
mast cell stabilizer
decongestent
7 categories of drugs to treat glaucoma
prostaglandin F anagonist carbonic anhydrase inhibitor beta blocker alpha receptor sympathomimetic miotic cholinesterase
outline beta blocker drugs
block beta receptors in the eye and this decreases the production of aqueous humor to decrease intraocular pressure
outline alpha receptor stimulator drugs
stimulate alpha receptors in the eye and this decreases the production of aqueous himor and also increases the outflow of aqueous humor
carbonic anhydrase inhibitor drugf
block the enzyme carbonic anhydrase which is active in the production of aqueous humor
what category of ophthalmic drugs is used to dilate the pupil and prepare for examination of the eye
mydriatic drugs
how is the drug botulinum toxin type A used to treat blepharospasm nystagmus and strabismus
it is injected
